About the Park

Birkenhead Lake Provincial Park is located 90 km north of Whistler. To get there, follow Highway 99 north from Whistler. In Pemberton follow the signs to Mount Currie and then to D’Arcy. The turnoff to the park is 33 km from the turnoff to D’Arcy. The park is 17 km from this point on a good quality, loose gravel road.

The park includes old growth forests, sub-alpine, and alpine environments. Birkenhead Lake is right beside the campground and there are several other small lakes in the park. The park protects important habitats for a variety of wildlife, including spotted owls, mountain goats, black bears, and grizzly bears.

Birkenhead Lake Park offers the serenity of wilderness camping with the convenience of vehicle access.  The Lake is great for fishing, complete with a boat launch. Fish for rainbow trout, dolly varden, kokanee, and whitefish. Hiking and mountain biking are popular activities on the network of trails in the park and beyond.  The lake is clear and fairly warm; great for swimming.

Firewood is available for purchase from the Park Attendant.

Canoes are available for rent on a first come, first serve basis provided by Paddle Sports.

Advisories

Limited access to this park during winter season

Vehicle access to the park is not available during the winter season. Visitors can still access the park on foot, but parking may not be available. Check park opening dates, camping, and facilities for details and opening dates.

Road conditions

Please be aware access to Birkenhead Lake is via Blackwater Lake Road which is a backcountry dirt road that can be pitted and rough on older low-riding vehicles. – Posted July 31, 2024

Park reopened – impacted trails remain closed

Birkenhead Lake Park has reopened following the 2024 wildfire event.

Some areas of the park most impacted by the wildfire, including the Lakeshore and Sockeye Creek trails, will remain closed until further notice. Danger tree assessments and fire remediation work are underway. – Updated May 28, 2025

Cellular service unavailable

There is no cell service at this park, please plan accordingly. The park operators can take both cash and cards for payment.
